Single-Vision Lenses Explained: Distance, Reading and Computer Options
Single-vision lenses are the simplest type of prescription eyeglass lens. Unlike bifocal or progressive lenses, they contain one corrective power across the usable lens area. That power can be designed for faraway objects, close reading or an intermediate computer distance.
The best option depends on your prescription, age, working distance and daily routine.
What Are Single-Vision Lenses?
A single-vision lens provides one type of vision correction rather than combining several prescription zones. It can correct common refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Single-vision glasses are often easier to adapt to than multifocal lenses because there are no visible lines or changes in power between different lens areas.
Types of Single-Vision Lenses
1. Distance Single-Vision Lenses
Distance lenses are designed to make faraway objects clearer. They are commonly prescribed for nearsightedness, astigmatism or other distance-vision problems.
They may be used for:
Driving
Watching television
Classroom or presentation viewing
Walking and outdoor activities
General everyday wear
Some people wear distance glasses continuously, while others only need them for specific tasks.
2. Reading Single-Vision Lenses
Reading lenses are optimized for close work, including books, labels, sewing and smartphones. They are frequently used for presbyopia—the gradual age-related reduction in the eye’s ability to focus at close distances.
Ready-made readers can be convenient, but both lenses usually have the same power and they do not correct every vision problem. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends prescription glasses when different powers or astigmatism correction are required.
3. Computer Single-Vision Lenses
Computer glasses focus at an intermediate distance—usually farther away than a book but closer than a television or road sign. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that computer screens are commonly positioned approximately 20–26 inches from the eyes.
A normal reading prescription may feel too strong for this distance, while distance glasses may not provide sufficient intermediate focus. Proper computer lenses should therefore be calculated using your prescription and actual screen position.

Choose lenses according to the distance at which you need the clearest vision:
Blurry road signs or television: Distance lenses may help.
Difficulty reading small print: Reading lenses may be appropriate.
Clear reading but uncomfortable screens: Consider computer lenses.
Blur at several distances: Progressive, bifocal or occupational lenses may be more suitable.
Screen discomfort is not always caused by incorrect lens power. Dry eyes, glare, poor lighting and an unsuitable workstation can also contribute. The American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive eye examination when digital symptoms continue.
